Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumor (abnormal growth of tissue) that develops in a woman's ovaries. (Ovaries are the reproductive organs that hold a woman's eggs.) Ovarian cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death among women. It most often occurs in women in their 50s.

American Brain Tumor Association: A not-for-profit, independent organization that serves people globally and award funds to researchers throughout the United States and Canada. Deep consumer information and up-to-date research data.

American Cancer Society: With chartered divisions throughout the country and over 3,400 local offices, the Society's mission is to fight cancer through research, education, patient service, advocacy and rehabilitation. This site offers deep consumer information, latest research, treatment evaluation tools and local resources.

American Psychosocial Oncology Society: The mission of APOS is to advance the science and practice of psychosocial care for people with cancer. This includes providing a forum for professionals and individuals interested in the areas of psychological, social, behavioral, and spiritual aspects of cancer. Online courses provide practical information for patients and doctors.

Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network: The first national advocacy organization dedicated to improving public awareness of bladder cancer and increasing research directed towards the diagnosis, treatment and cure of the disease. This site has practical information with useful tools.

Brain Tumor Society: The goal of this organization is to offer the latest information for the entire brain tumor community, from newly diagnosed patients to survivors, families and healthcare professionals. The site has resources for seminars, financial aid and research.

BreastCancer.org: This organization is dedicated to providing the most reliable, complete, and up-to-date information about breast cancer. Their mission is to help women and their loved ones make sense of the complex medical and personal information about breast cancer to make the best decisions. Headlines of latest research and many other resources.

CancerCare: This organization provides free professional support services to anyone affected by cancer including caregivers, children, loved ones and the bereaved. CancerCare programs – including counseling, education, financial assistance and practical help – are provided by trained oncology social workers. Resources include counselors and educational programs specific to type of illness. Also in Spanish.

Cancer.net: Cancer.Net, formerly People Living With Cancer, brings the expertise and resources of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (see above), the voice of the world’s cancer physicians, to people living with cancer and those who care for and care about them. ASCO is composed of nearly 25,000 oncologists globally who are the leaders in advancing cancer care. All the information and content on Cancer.Net was developed and approved by the cancer doctors at ASCO. Extensive consumer information, referrals, doctor participation.

Cancer Hope Network: The mission of this organization is to provide one-on-one support to people undergoing treatment for cancer, and to their families.

Cancer Information Services: This is a national information and education network. The CIS is a free public service of the NCI, the U.S.'s primary agency for cancer research.

Cancer Liaison Program: The staff of the Cancer Liaison Program, located in FDA's Office of Special Health Issues, work with FDA's oncology medical staff to bring the patient advocate's perspective into the review of new drugs to treat cancer.

Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation: Their mission is cancer prevention and early detection through research, education and community outreach to all populations, including children and the underserved.

Caring Connections: Provides free resources and information to help people make decisions about end-of-life care and services before a crisis.

Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups: The organization’s mission is  improving patient awareness of clinical trials, facilitating access and promoting participation. The site has a comprehensive clinical trial database, trademarked as TrialCheck®, which allows users to identify which clinical trials are appropriate. The information is updated daily.

Colon Cancer Alliance: The organization provides support for those affected by this disease, helping patients and caregivers move from fear to hope, from helplessness to control, from isolation to community. The site has good resources and downloadable documents.

Colorectal Cancer Coalition: An advocacy group that also provides consumers with the latest information and practical information about treatment.

Emergingmed.com: This clinical trial matching service provides online and telephone matching. EmergingMed’s Navigator service enables users to create a detailed profile to see if they match the eligibility requirements of more than 10,000 trials in the United States and Canada.

ENNACT: The organization’s mission is to identify, implement and validate innovative community-centered approaches to cancer clinical trials education. They have three regional centers: Boston, Decatur and Tacoma.

Gilda’s Club Worldwide: The mission of this organization is to provide meeting places where men, women and children living with cancer, along with their families and friends, can join with others to build a personal network of social and emotional support as an integral part of cancer treatment. There are more than 22 regional clubs.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation: This organization is dedicated to researching the cause of inflammatory breast bancer, an advanced form of breast cancer usually not detected by mammograms or ultrasounds. IBC requires immediate aggressive treatment with chemotherapy prior to surgery and is treated differently than more common types of breast cancer.

Intercultural Cancer Council: This organization promotes policies, programs, partnerships and research to eliminate the unequal burden of cancer among racial and ethnic minorities and medically underserved populations in the United States and its associated territories.

International Myeloma Foundation: The goal of this organization to provide consumers with the most up-to-date and in-depth information about multiple myeloma, including research and treatment advances, as well as education, support and advocacy programs.

Joan’s Legacy: The Joan Scarangello Foundation to Conquer Lung Cancer is committed to funding innovative research and increasing awareness of the world’s leading cancer killer, with a special focus on non-moking-related lung cancer. This site, while mainly a site to support the foundation, has many lung cancer resources.

Kidney Cancer Association: This is a charitable organization of patients, family members, physicians, researchers, and other health professionals. The site is mostly links to other kidney cancer sites.

Lance Armstrong Foundation: The goal of this organization is to inspire and empower people affected by cancer. They believe that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. The site provides practical information and tools for people with cancer to live life on their own terms.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
: The world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The site has extensive information for patients and doctors. It is in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer: The mission of this organization is to empower all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life. Site provides a hotline number and extensive information on research, medicines and surgeries.

Lung Cancer Alliance: This association is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer and those at risk for the disease. Site has patient information and clinical trial updates.

Lymphoma Research Foundation
: The site provides valuable information about the different types of lymphoma (Hodgkin  and non-Hodgkin), diagnostic techniques and treatment options.

Melanoma Research Foundation: The mission of this organization is to support medical research for finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma; to educate patients and physicians about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma; and to raise the awareness of this disease and the need for a cure. The site has extensive resources.

MetaCancer Foundation: This foundation provides resources and support for metastatic cancer survivors and their caregivers. It works with The Wellness Community to provide support regionally.

Multiple Myeloma Research
: The mission of the MMRF is to aggressively fund research that will lead to the development of new treatments for multiple myeloma. The site has patient information and resources.

National Breast Cancer Coalition: Advocacy group that lobbies at national, state and local levels for public policies that impact breast cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Site has latest research findings and laws with this group's position.

National Cancer Institute: Government site offering patient education, referrals and medical information.

National Cervical Cancer Coalition: A grass-roots nonprofit organization dedicated to serving women with, or at risk for, cervical cancer and HPV disease. Site offer education, referrals, insurance and ways to get individual counseling.

The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship: The organization is the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the country, advocating for quality cancer care for all Americans and empowering cancer survivors. Site has listing of extensive online resources.

National Lymphedema Network: This organization provides education and guidance to lymphedema patients, health care professionals and the public by disseminating information on the risk reduction and management of primary and secondary lymphedema.

National Bone Marrow Donor Program: The goal of this organization is to make sure every patient has the best possible chance to receive a needed transplant. To do so, it recruits committed donors and spearheads the search and matching process. Site has extensive information regarding this process.

National Ovarian Cancer Coalition: The mission of this organization is to raise awareness and promote education about ovarian cancer. The site has extensive patient education information, local referrals and culturally specific resources.

Native American Cancer Research: This organization is dedicated to helping improve the lives of Native American cancer patients and survivors. Site provides good statistics and consumer information.

North American Brain Tumor Foundation: The goal of this organization is to provide informed representation wherever healthcare decisions are made that affect brain tumor patients. The site has some consumer information.

Nueva Vida: Organization dedicated to information and advocacy. Site is in Spanish and offers referrals, education, support group information and provides other extensive information

Oncolink: Cancer research site provided by the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

Oral Cancer Foundation: This foundation is a national public nonprofit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy and support activities. The site provides extensive information on oral cancer.

Ovarian Cancer National Alliance: Founded by the leaders from seven ovarian cancer groups, the Alliance’s goal is to establish a coordinated national effort to place ovarian cancer education, policy and research issues prominently on the agendas of national policymakers and women's health care leaders. Pancreatic Cancer Action Network: National organization helps fund research and provides patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The site has extensive information.

Skin Cancer Foundation: The foundation's mission is to decrease the incidence of the disease through public and professional education, medical training and research. The site has extensive consumer information, recommended products and a physician-finder service.

Support For People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer: This is a patient-directed, self-help organization dedicated to meeting the needs of oral and head and neck cancer patients.

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation: The world's largest grass-roots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. The site has extensive consumer information and local resources.

Thyroid Cancer Survivor’s Association: A national nonprofit organization of thyroid cancer survivors, family members and health care professionals. The site provides extensive information and is updated is by thyroid cancer survivors.

The Wellness Community: TWC is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free support, education and hope to people with cancer and their loved ones. Through participation in professionally led support groups, educational workshops, nutrition and exercise programs, and stress-reduction classes, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of their disease. The organization has 24 regional centers in the U.S., two international centers, 73 satellite offices and an online community.
