How Do I Know My Dentist Sterilizes Instruments Properly?

Q: With everything in the news about contagious diseases, how can I be sure that my dentist sterilizes the instruments properly?

A: All dentists are required by law to comply with regulations that ensure proper cleanliness of the office and complete sterilization of all dental instruments. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is a federal (and often state government) agency whose mission is to ensure the safety and health of all employees. The different dental licensing agencies in each state are governed by the Board of Consumer Affairs, and in large part ensure patient safety. Both of these agencies require strict sterilization practices. You should feel comfortable asking your dental health care provider to explain his/her procedures. They should be able to produce sterilization log books and to explain all of their disinfection and sterilization procedures. The instruments to be used on you should be opened in front of you. This way you know that they were not left unattended in the treatment room before your arrival. If you have serious concerns about your dental office's sterilization practices, call OSHA or your State Dental Board and ask for an inquiry.
