The Female Brain

The women in our groups universally said this is an important book for all women to read. Most were reading passages of it to their husband. Here is what Publishers Weekly had to say about it: "This comprehensive new look at the hormonal roller coaster that rules women's lives down to the cellular level, "a user's guide to new research about the female brain and the neurobehavioral systems that make us women," offers a trove of information, as well as some stunning insights. Though referenced like a work of research, Brizedine's writing style is fully accessible. Brizendine provides a fascinating look at the life cycle of the female brain from birth ("baby girls will connect emotionally in ways that baby boys don't") to birthing ("Motherhood changes you because it literally alters a woman's brain-structurally, functionally, and in many ways, irreversibly") to menopause (when "the female brain is nowhere near ready to retire") and beyond." We say, buy it now.

"Siren" Book Creates a Big Brouhaha

The women in our Women Talking groups in Rhode Island, Indiana, Colorado and California had very different opinions about the book, “Simply Irresistible: Unleash Your Inner Siren and Mesmerize Any Man,” by Ellen T. White.  It turned out to be divisive.  Some women loved the stories of powerful women who owned their sexuality.  Other women saw the women portrayed in the book as highly manipulative.

Nights and Married Sex

Having or not having sex as a married couple is making the news right now spurred on by two different couples that have written books about their commitments to having sex every night. In one book, Just Do It, the couple committed to 101 nights of sex. In the other book, 365 Nights: A Memoir of Intimacy, the couple committed to sex every night for a year. And, then, both couples decided to write a book about their experience.

In full disclosure, we haven't read the books. The 365 Nights book isn't even out yet. But we are intrigued and it does sound like a fun experiment. What do you think?
