Laughing is the Best Medicine for Your Heart

As reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center

Can a laugh every day keep the heart attack away? Maybe so.

Laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect you against a heart attack, according to a recent study by cardiologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. The study, which is the first to indicate that laughter may help prevent heart disease, found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to people of the same age without heart disease.

"The old saying that 'laughter is the best medicine,' definitely appears to be true when it comes to protecting your heart," says Michael Miller, M.D., director of the Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "We don't know yet why laughing protects the heart, but we know that mental stress is associated with impairment of the endothelium, the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This can cause a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to fat and cholesterol build-up in the coronary arteries and ultimately to a heart attack."

A Fish Called Wanda
Who can forget John Cleese with that big fish (or was it a small fish) over his private parts?

Absolutely Fabulous
The Brit's get it - give these women every vice known to man and they can still function. You go, girls.

Babette's Feast
A visiting general is about to have the feast of his lifetime, for the second time, in a most unexpected place; a remote 19th-century Danish village.

Bella Martha (Mostly Martha)
Chef and 'control freak' Martha's job is threatened by the introduction of an 8-year-old niece and a louche Italian interloper in her kitchen. Beware, there are sharp knives involved.

Best in Show
Do you love your dog? Can you laugh at yourself?

Caddyshack
See it the first time for the cast Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Chevy Chase return for the gopher.

Chappelle’s Show – The Series Collection
Biting and shockingly funny.

Dumb and Dumber
Ok, this might not have held up that well. But still good for more than a few laughs.

Eddie Izzard’s Dress to Kill
His stand-up routine as filmed in San Francisco. Describing himself as an action transvestite he also plays a death as a flight attendant serving cake or death. Somehow it all works together.

Groundhog Day
Classic Bill Murray. Classic Bill Murray. Classic Bill Murray.

Hairspray, the original one and the La Travolta remake
Divine is lovely and tender in the original as is John Travolta in the remake.

Happy Feet
Who doesn’t smile when those penguins start dancing?

Harold and Maude
Young man meets much older woman and trouble ensues. Good trouble.

High Fidelity
John Cusak, Jack Black, and the ultimate fave music list. Watch John's Rob character tries to figure out his romantic failures with his exe's by slotting them into his Five worst Break-ups List.

Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amelie)
What only a French woman can do with a look, and charm, and innocence. Follow her around Paris to watch the effect.

Little Miss Sunshine
It's the cast of characters, including an ancient VW Bus, and their dysfunctions that make this indie quirky and hilarious.

Mel Brooks Collection: Blazing Saddles/Young Frankenstein/Silent Move/Robin Hood: Men in Tights/To Be or Not to Be/History of the World
Probably the most laughs/dollar.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Loved the silliness. Give me those coconuts, I fancy a ride.

Muriel’s Wedding
Toni Collette as an over weight, misfit young women dreaming of getting married to Abba music. Honestly, it is sweet and funny.

My Cousin Vinny
Vinny travels to the deep South to defend a couple of 'youts' in court. Only a New Yorker could be this resourceful and lucky. Watch Marisa Tormei have a stomping fit over her ticking internal time clock.

Ratatouille
Beautifully drawn funny animated movie about a rat as a gourmet chef. Not funny ha-ha, but funny-sweet.

School of Rock
At first I thought, another adolescent man movie, then I laughed and loved, Jack Black, as a sweet, edgy, ‘music teacher.’

Shirley Valentine
This movie that hasn’t aged extremely well. Still, it makes the short list because it is great to see Shirley claim her life and have such warm, still relevant insights into men. Not funny ha-ha, but still good.

Sideways
Some men should never get married, but they go ahead anyway. Learn all about Pinot Noir as you watch Jack make a mess of his last fling.

Silver Streak
Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are still funny in this movie that is about a mystery that isn’t mysterious. This has aged like fine wine.

Some Like it Hot
We love everything about this movie. Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe. Fabulous! And, to think, we left it off the original list. What were we thinking?

Something about Mary
Hair gel, ladies?

Strictly Ballroom
The current ballroom dancing craze is totally tame compared to this manic Aussie movie. The over-the-top hairdos and creative costumes will keep you in stitches.

Talladega Nights – The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Even more adolescent males. This time they drive fast cars, win races and keep you laughing.

The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Australian transvestites perform for bewildered outback cowboys. See it for Terrence Stamp’s outrageous performance.

The 40 Year Old Virgin
Worth watching just for the hair removal scene which reportedly was real.

Tootsie

Classic cross-dressing movie. Why is that mostly always funny?

Triplets of Belleville
Has only a few words, wonderful music and a very dedicated maman (it’s a French movie, that isn’t a typo) who saves her son from peril.

Waiting for Guffman
Another parody by the man who took us to the dogs. If you like theatre or the arts, this is a good giggle.

Wedding Crashers
More adolescent males. They crash weddings for sex. More laughs.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
No one does women in the middle of emotional crisis funnier than Pedro Almodóvar.

Zoolander
Fashion at its funniest.

On behalf of Jay: Add, Crazy People, Dudley Moore and Daryl Hannah and Noises Off!, Carol Burnett and John Ritter. You'd have to be dead not to laugh at these.

Two movies I liked were "Miss Congeniality" with Sandra Bullock. I've seen it 6 times and I still laugh every time. Another one is "Runaway Bride" with Julia Roberts...has a serious side, but lots of humor as well.
