![]() Cellulite is a term used to describe the pitting, bulging and deformation of the skin usually affecting the thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen of women. More than 80 percent of women above the age of 18 have cellulite, regardless of their size, weight or physical fitness. Women are more likely to have cellulite than men because men's fat cells reside deeper in the skin, while women's are closer to the surface, causing the ripples associated with cellulite. The VelaSmooth® system is powered by elos (Electro-Optical Synergy) which combines Bi-Polar Radiofrequency (RF) and Infrared Light energy along with the added feature of negative pressure tissue mobilization. The synergy of the three components makes VelaSmooth an effective treatment for those seeking a medical cellulite solution. During each 30-minute treatment, Infrared Light is used to increase the elasticity of the skin and heat the target. Conducted radiofrequency heats the adipose (fat) tissue deep in the skin, dispersing oxygen within each fat cell, and increasing blood supply to the region. In addition, tissue fluids (lymphatic and venous drainage) are mobilized through simultaneous negative pressure vacuum (suction) and rotating deep massage through the special handpiece, providing for further smoothing of the skin. Editor's Note: Velashape is the latest generation of this treatment and shows great promise. Dr. Tina S.
