Q: Should I use liquid or pencil eyeliner and should I line my upper lids and under my eyes?
A: One of the trickiest steps in applying your makeup is the eyeliner. When I'm giving a lesson, most of my clients dread this because they are completely overwhelmed and don't know what kind of eyeliner to use. There are three basic types that should get you through any look. 1) Pencil eyeliner. This is the most common and often comes in a variety of colors. I like these because they can look both soft and smudgy or clean and defined. But if you tend to tear up or find yourself wiping your eyes throughout the day, this might not be for you. 2. Powder. Yep! I often use a good ol' eyeshadow with a “push brush” (splurge and get a high quality one like Nars' Push Eyeliner Brush) by taping it into the color and then “pushing” right into the lash line. This is an ideal technique for a clean, soft, natural look. 3. Liquid or gel liner. Both of these products are geared toward a higher intensity of color, and the big benefit of gel liner (I'm a fan of Bobbi Brown) is that it is waterproof and smudge proof. Perfect if you are going to a wedding or special event. As a rule of thumb, I prefer these applied only to the top lash-line, while powder and pencil are appropriate on top and bottom. Remember, the more you wear, the more dramatic you will look. So you might want to reserve lining the bottom of your peepers to evening affairs.
