What's the Best Floss?

Q: Are there any real differences between types of floss?

A: The most important aspect of flossing is to simply do it! With that said, there are many different flosses on the market, and one type doesn't suit all teeth.

People who have very tight contacts between their teeth have found that thin gortexlike materials, such as found in Glide Floss, are easiest to use. These products can, however, "glide over the plaque" too, and care must be given to wrap the floss securely around the tooth with some pressure to compensate for this.

Some people prefer the waxed floss and others the unwaxed. My personal preference is the woven floss. It is sometimes difficult to find, but overall I have seen the best results with my patients who use this type. The woven texture grabs onto the plaque and effectively removes it from the roots of the teeth.

It is best to discuss what would be best for your teeth with your dentist or dental hygienist.
