What Devices Help Those With Arthritis?

Q: My mother has trouble brushing her teeth because she has arthritis in her hands. Are there any devices that can help her to brush and floss properly?

A: Fortunately, there are now many devices available for individuals who have trouble holding toothbrushes and floss. I have found that electric toothbrushes are much easier for people with arthritis and other physical limitations. They do the brushing while the individual simply holds it in position. They have thicker handles, which also help in grasping.

There are also flossing devices that have the floss attached onto a handle. One particularly good one is the Access Flosser by Johnson & Johnson. Many of my patients have found this product easy to use and compliance has been great.
