Q: Are oral birth control pills safe for perimenopausal women?
A: Oral contraceptive pills are safe in the perimenopausal woman in properly selected individuals. They should not be used if the individual has hypertension, heart disease, obesity, phlebitis, history of emboli or breast cancer. In the correctly selected woman they are safe and effective in regulating the menstrual cycle. They reduce symptoms of perimenopause and have many other noncontraceptive benefits as well, such as reducing the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer. They can be used, if indicated, up to the age of 55 years.
