Global Fund for Women

The Global Fund for the Women is the largest fund in the world exclusively supporting the advancement of women’s rights in the developing world. We support women working to improve health, education, and the environment, and women working to end violence. We believe in strengthening women’s leadership and in supporting women who are doing things differently, crafting new models of feminine power. Instead of simply demanding a place at the table, these women use their courage and imagination to chart a wholly different way of organizing economic and political systems grounded in principles of egalitarianism, human rights and ecological sustainability.

The Global Fund does all it can to ensure that we get money directly into the hands of creative, gutsy women making change in their own communities. We accept proposals in any language from Mandarin to Russian to Arabic. We view the 3,500 women’s groups we’ve funded in 167 countries around the globe as our equals, our partners in transforming our world. Collectively, we are dismantling structural inequality that has demeaned and kept 51% of the world’s population disenfranchised for centuries, for millennia. Over the past 20 years, we have raised and awarded more than $69 million to 3700+ women's organizations that are changing the balance of power, and working together to make the world a more just, sustainable and healthy place.

One example of an Indonesian group supported by the Global Fund:
Komnas Perempuan, the National Commission on Violence Against Women, was established in 1988 in Jakarta, as a response to the sexual violence endured by ethnic Chinese women during riots earlier that year. The group’s long term goal is to eliminate all forms of violence against women in Indonesia. The group has received $23,000 in grant support from the Global Fund.
